For what it's worth, there is a relatively nice exhibition of quilts from the early 19th century to the late 20th currently on display at the Chicago Art Institute. There is a truly stunning example of a bedcover that is silk taffeta with appliqued silk (it's a flower basket pattern with a border of grapes and leaves). If nothing else, it is a really wonderful look at colors, fabric (there's an 1850s quilt that has edging made out of a white cotton with a multi-colored polka dot print) and quilting techniques. The way the exhibit is set up makes it very accessible and relatively easy to study. If you're in the Chicago area in the next week and a half, I would encourage you to take a look see (Tuesdays are free to the general public).
