  • Perryville, Who's going? Need a friend

    Hello all,

I haven't posted in sometime. When I wanted to, the site was down . . . my luck as of late.

Moving on. I was curious as to whom, of those who frequent this board, is going to Perryville? I've decided to make use of my civie duds and go all out civilian, a change of pace. I received new work boots (R. Land make) as an early B-day gift, have been sewing like a mad man and am growing out my whiskers, but the thing I can't buy or grow are fellow civilians to hangout with. I haven't had much time to reenact out here, all of my pards being back East. My girlfriend was supposed to attend as an employee of KY State Parks but has since been informed she cannot go.

I've been in KY just over a year now, bout 4 hours east of Perryville and went to the event last year as a spectator. However, I'm not sure what activities will be going on for civilians or what I can partake in. I can swing and axe, play the tin whistle, dance and cook . . . IE I'm up for anything! :) Any info is appreciated.

    Best Regards,

If'n you hit up the tavern you will find me in civilian duds, or maybe the Wide Awake tent...Unless I am out shooting. I will be at one of those three places MOST of the time though!

I am grateful that Mitch is actively recruiting whistle players, dancers, and general low lifes and lay abouts to frequent the Tavern!

Being as folks sometimes can't find all the links:

        Living History Village
The Living History Village is a portrayal of the town of Perryville in early fall 1862. Merchants and farm families will be busily going about their daily life in the small farming community of Perryville. Living historians will recreate the Parks Store, the Barker Hotel, Tucker’s Tavern and many other prominent buildings. The Living History Village is interactive and guest participation is highly encouraged.

The village will open to the public on Saturday 9:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. Sunday camp will again open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. Activities and scenarios will be ongoing throughout the day.

The Singing Milkmaids will perform throughout Saturday and Sunday hourly at the Opera House. The Opera House will be open Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. for a special Variety Show - Napoleon’s Conquest of Egypt.

I'll be there as well. If you see two ladies who look like they're up to no good, it will probably be Silvana Siddali and I. I'm lookin' forward to it.

Will the civilian area be located in an easily found area or is it hidden away? I must have missed it a couple years ago and don't remember seeing anything like that although I had heard something about it. Sounds like something I might want to take a little 'French leave' to come spend some time seeing the sights and sounds.

              Mr. Comer,

We are a bit 'hidden'--there for those that make the effort, but off the beaten path of both military and 'mixed' camps. The best directions I can give are of the 'girl direction' sort--maps and GPS don't mean a thing to me.

Go to the Park Museum Building. Stand in front of the door and look at the door. Now, eyes right, and look down a long hill. Several things will stand out: A water supply, a really big tent for Mr. Hughes's lecture and show, and the wooden store front of Ezra Barnhouse Goods.

That's it. Taven is across from Barnhouse's, and the Bank is right beside it. You'll want to know where the Bank is, because that is where you will change your modern folding cash money (no plastic or check) into period money that will be honored in the town.

The Pretty Girls are serving up front. I'll be out back washing dishes.

Thank you to all who have replied. One more question. As far as sleeping, is it just a "do as you please" thing or tent city or . . .? Please excuse this ignorant soldier :) I'm so used to plopping down with pards round a fire, then hittin ghte hay on a gum blanket. I'd hate to set a fire up and get a whoopin.

I suppose my questions should have been more in the lines of, "Where is the Living History Village and how do I get involved?". Those questions have been answered very kindly. I like to go into new things with a little knowledge to make my life easier. Knowing now about the cash to greenback trade is a good thing for my stomach and

I'll find my way round the area. Hopefully I'll find time be to make some treats to bring along, if nothing else at least some KY tobacco. :wink_smil

Thank you again! I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you.

                Best,

In addition to Mr. Hughes's lecture at the opera house AKA The Mockingbird Theater, there will be performances by the Singing Milk Maids, the world famous Allendale Melodians and if the rumor is true, 'a special guest, straight from her recent appearance for King of Italy, Senoria Bella'

                        Best,
I'm gonna answer here, not becasue its my show, because its not, but because Mrs. Simpson is pretty covered up right now.

Sadly, nobody's laid a boatful of money on us for this thing,so of necessity there is a good bit of tentage in this area, along with some wooden shelters and false fronts.

Quarters are very tight here and children and animals plentiful---thus if you set up a fire just anywhere here, you will get whuppin. There is a 'summer kitchen' set up near the water source, that promises a bake oven and a decent place to wash up without stooping over. And a common fire.

If you happen to have your own period correct brazier, you are welcome to use that (closely watched at all times---back to the number of children again).

Folks that just must have there very own fire in their very own fire pit are welcome to do that over in mixed camps.

The Park is not providing any bedding straw.--if you need it, you will have to bring your own. Given how soft that grassy ground is after 10 inches of rain this weekend, you'll be well served to bring a second gum blanket, and some straw if you have room.

As to how you get involved--at this late point in the game, come with a willing heart and a good attitude. Civilians plan wayyyyy ahead, and a lot of parts have been assigned for months, with major work already done this time last year--at this point we are right down to the wire on last minute details.

Oh, if you have a pair of overalls and maybe a good corn knife or a small hand scythe, that would be a real good thing.

Don't overthink this thing son, get your gear together and come on. We'll be rolling in ourselves sometime Thursday afternoon.

                          Mrs. Lawson -

Yeah, I over think a lot of things. haha Just one of my glinting characteristics that can be either for or against progress.

I recently received a few e-mails from Mrs. Simpson regarding camping, activities and the like. She was very helpful and answered several questions.

Had a feeling about the fires and sleeping arangements. I have been working on hemming up the ends of a large piece of painted cloth I bought. I cut it slightly longer then a gum blanket for the sake of my "6-footness". It will make a nice cover from the elements.

                          Mr Corbett -

Thank you so much for the invite. I do enjoy playing music very much beig a long time drummer and plucking at my guitar daily. I will try to track you down at some point.

                          -------

I hope to get in Friday a good bit before dark. Unless I can get off, which will be tough enough.

Hopefully I'll have the opportuity to get more involved with pre-event things at some point in the future. (After seeing how my ew job search works out and where I"ll be living next. funfun)

I'll probably just be meandering about and figuring things out as I go. I've always been a "Johnny-on-the-spot" at my workplaces and am just the "round peg that can fit in a square hole." It'll be a fun time :)
