    All the best,
The drawing that appears on the cover of the Homespun Single Breasted Frock Coat Pattern is copied from a fashion plate that appeard in Louis Devere's Gentleman's Magazine in 1860. Turn to page 115 of R.L. Shep's Civil War Gentleman and you'll see the full fashion plate in context. It is a Paletot and not a Frock and very 1860s looking not 1849 looking.

While the drawing is of a paletot, the pattern is certainly a frock coat. I have it, and have been tweeking it for about two years. Whoever decided to use that image for the cover of a frock pattern should be hit on the head with a wet noodle! Or maybe 15 yards of wet wool (if you can lift it)!

I know exactly what they were thinking, "It looks frocky enough, besides, who's gonna' know the difference?"

Answer: Anyone who's studied men's 1840s-60s fashion for about 10 minutes!

        Jason,

Good luck tweeking that pattern, it needs lots of it, 2 years sounds about right. I made my first civilian coat with that pattern, before I knew any better, and the end result was a giant waste of time and money. Once I had taught myself to successfully draft out patterns of my own I drafted a couple of frock patterns that blow the s**t out of the Homespun one.:D Take some pattern drafting courses or teach yourself like I did and in 2 years you'll be able to draft all kinds of patterns instead of just tinkering with crappy ones. No offense, I think you have a great looking impression.:) I liked your Bohy's website, doesn't look like it's been updated in a while though.

          Frock or Paletot???

"While the drawing is of a paletot, the pattern is certainly a frock coat." All the more reason NOT to fool with it!

In short, it was a bad drawing.
