  • Cranford, 1998 ed.

I recently came across a copy of Cranford -- a 1998 edition. Can anyone tell me, other than the addition of 30 pages of introductory text, and bibliography, if there are any major differences? Skimming the pages, I could not find any of distinction --even the language appeared "mostly" accurate. Thank you.

If it's listed as a "complete, unabridged" version, you won't find any differences. Elizabeth Gaskill is lovely!

I have yet to find "complete" and "unabridged" on there -- or "abridged" for that matter! I had the opportunity to read excerpts from Wives and Daughters and would like to read the whole thing as I enjoy her style of writing (that I know so far).

You might check your local library--there was a recent resurgence in publishing Gaskill's novels, after some were adapted for the BBC, and even our small city library had the whole lot of them. Cranford is hilarious. You'll be hard pressed to keep in mind it was written in our period, rather than last week. Just be sure you're not drinking or eating anything when you get to the lace collar scene.

Thanks! I don't know why I didn't call my local library in the first place. I look forward to reading it -- the language I saw surprised me a little. I still tend to think of writing from that time, especially in novels, to be more formal.
