    Re: knit suspender pattern

    Thank you all so far.

I look forward to seeing the other patterns.

One thing is that it appears that the patterns do not use wool yarn, so maybe my knitting project won't be as I'd envisioned it.

      Re: knit suspender pattern

Most wools will be too springy and have too much stretch and give for this use, even with tight kniting. Cotton or good silk is normally called for.

The Workwomans Guide has a pattern for knitted braces. They can be done in wool, cotton or silk. It is an easy pattern.

If you choose to make these, the third row is missing a few stitches. Here is my "translated" version of this pattern, which I used to make braces for the suspender contest last year at the Ladies and Gentlemen of the 1860's conference.

          Gentlemen’s Knitted Braces
          From Godey’s, 1855

Materials. – Rich, dark blue, or crimson crochet silk, two knitting-needles, No. 14 (modern size 0, or 2 mm).

          Cast on 19 stitches.

          1st row. – Knit 2, m1 (=make 1, I did mine by yarning over), k1, slip 1 k1, pass the slip stitch over, p1, k2 tog, k1, p1, k1, slip 1, k1, pass the slip stitch over, p1, k2 tog, k1, m1, k2.

          2nd. – Purl 5, k1, p2, k1, p2, k1, p5.

3rd. – Knit 2, m1, k1, m1, slip 1, k1, pass the slip stitch over, p1, k2 tog, p1, k2 tog, p1, slip 1, kl, pass the slip stitch over, m1, k1, m1, k2. (I added the stitches in italics in this row; without them the pattern is incorrect.)

          4th. – Purl 6, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p 6.

          5th. – Knit 2, m1, k3, m1, slip 1, k2 tog, pass the slip stitch over, p1, slip 1, k2 tog, pass the slip stitch over, m1, k3, m1, k2.

          6th. – Purl 8, k1, p8.

          7th. – Knit 2, m1, k5, m1, slip 1, k2 tog, pass the slip stitch over, m1, k5, m1, k2.

          8th. – Purled.

Repeat this pattern until you have done the length required for one-half of the braces. Then cast on, and do another length. When made up, they should be lined with white Petersham ribbon (the closest I could find was 100% cotton grosgrain), and finished with white kid trimmings (I used fine white leather).

Very interesting account of Iowa in the early 1800's. Could you tell me where this comes from? I'd love to read more about it :)

                Re: knit suspender pattern

Does anyone have a scan of the actual Godey's 1855 pattern they could send me? I can't seem to find that volume on Google.

As for the Godey's 1861 pattern, not only did I find the original on Google, but I also found images of pair someone made on a blog: http://theladiesreadingroom.blogspot...wn-issues.html
                Respectfully,

                  Re: knit suspender pattern

Those are knit with cotton and a killer on my fingers!!! They are very densely knit on small needles. You need to find someone who loves you VERY MUCH (might help if they are blood relation) to knit you a pair.
