  • Civilian Footwear

I have a pair of good brogans that I wear for my soldiers impression. I also have a civilian impression. I don't do this one as often, however, I take this impression as important as I do my soldiers impression. I am wanting to purchase a good accurate, period, pair of civilian brogans. Who carries them? do they have a website? I don't want to spend an arm,and a leg, for something that I don't wear as much as my soldiers uniform, but, I still want a good pair that will be accurate and last.

    Thanks

Depending on your civilian impression, perhaps a pair of boot, such as those sold by Missouri Boot and Shoe. While they are expensive.... at least you can wear them in dual impressions. Civilian and Military (this is what I do with my boots).

But I also have a pair of Robert Lands Civilian shoes (with not hob nails or heal plates for when we have social events, and concern for floors is considered).

I have a pair of Mattimore Oxford style civilian shoe that I use for both CS and Civilian impression. I got them through Orchard Hill Sulter (Approved Vendor) during a bully buy a while back. Like Brian I do not have hobb nails but did get a heel plate.

            Re: Civilian Footwear

I've run part of the gauntlet in regards to civilian footwear. Have a pair of Mattimore English walking shoes. Fantastic shoe and a great look. It has a "middle class" look to it all in all - thick heal, nice taper, flexible leather. They lasted me a good long with almost everyday use in the summer I spent at Ft DE interpreting. They're "holy" at the moment, but still have all the seams. I recently received a pair of Rebert Land's workman boots with heal plates. Again, a great, but "hardier" pair of shoes. Perfect for my current civilian impression - laborer, worker bee, what-have-you. Both pairs I've used for soldiering as well. Both piars also have heal plates.

The price for either company ain't cheap but you get a quality product. It will take a foot tracing and a mail order if you go through Mattimore. Land usually has several sizes in stock.

            Good luck!

I am still working on that. At present, 99.9% of the time I portray a soldier of the 3rd Ark. However, in the not too distant future my old decrepid ass will have to be a civilian if I wish to continue in the hobby. I am doing research on being a statesman or a planter. Truth is my wife makes me wear this fru-fru civilin outfit at balls and other gatherings when I need to appear more genteel, and not smell like ass & gunpowder. So with that being said, I need an appropriate pair of shoes. I like the camp shoes from Robert Land.

                  Re: Civilian Footwear

I don't think the Camp Shoes would be appropriate for a statesman, or politician, unless they were worn for leisure activities, such as perhaps on a hunt, or other sporting activity. Definitely not what I'd consider appropriate for formal activities.

Perhaps a pair of Boots? As previously mentioned, they can be worn for both military and civilian impressions, particularly a civilian of means.

Camp shoes are out. That makes sense, a statesman would be a man of means. He would have a better pair of shoes. I had a pair of boot( still got them in fact) they hurt my feet. I am not ruling out boots. I am still looking at shoes.

                      Re: Civilian Footwear

                      Good to go!

There are a number of Civilian shoes out there, by Robert Land and MBS (that I know of).

And I agree with you ... comfort should be a big consideration.

As I know you are aware... be mindful that with no heel plates, the heels can wear down quickly. But with heel plates, you may be restricted from some social events in private residences, or Living History events at historic homes. That's something you'll have to weigh. The types of events that you participate in will be a consideration in this.

Me? If I know the event will require to me mindful of scuffing floors, etc. I'll wear the Robert Land civilian shoes I have. If however, I know the event will not require such considerations, I wear a pair of boots.
