I am looking to assist a young woman in finding a supplier of good every day working/middle class womens shoes. Can anyone help?

Chris, you're in a familiar situation for many of us. :) The last good discussions we had on the topic were lost in the Great Crash of '06, too, which is a pity.
The most fashionable options are found from Robert Land (just ordered a pair myself, actually... side lacers!):
Fugawee has two mid-range boots (either the Rose or the Victorian) that can work for better working classes: http://www.fugawee.com
While Tom Mattimore doesn't have the women's boots illustrated on his site, I've a good friend who swears by his boots for herself and her girls, and we've been very pleased with the quality of his work for my husband's boots, too: http://www.civilwarboots.com
Thanks Mrs Clark,
I think she is looking for more of a rural farmer impression, not a town dweller. Also you suggested side lace, is this more correct than front lacers? My daughter uses Lands Balmorals. Is the the Missiouri Boot and Shoe Co. a no no?

Thanks to all, Robert has been my shoe supplier for many years and I guess go with who you know.

Some years back (2002) I ordered a pair of shoes for my wife from Bob Serio (Missouri Boot and Shoe). They have given her a few years of good service, we have no complaints whatsoever. I don't know if he lists them on his website / catalog, but he can make them.

My husband purchased me a pair of the "Rose" from Fugawee about 4-5 years ago. They are my primary pair and used about 90% of the events I attend. They are still holding up very well and very confortable. Your friend will have to get use putting her foot in since until the elastic loosens up.
I know my husband is wishing and looking for someone that makes the male version.
Missouri Boot & Shoe boots would be just lovely for a working class/active boot; front lacing is dirt common mid-century. I just happen to be very fond of side-lacers for fashion use. :) For slogging through the farmyard or trekking overland, sturdy boots are called for.
So, if she's undertaking mid-range working class or lower, go for something sturdy. If she's normally going to be doing upper-end working class or higher (middle classes), a fashion boot might be called for.
I agree with the others in the impression would decide what shoe one would wear. I have a really nice pair of English Walkings shoes from Missouri boot and shoe and they work great for hard work and hard walking. I also have a pair of Robert Land Balmoral that I use for fashion and a pair of turn shoes hand made by Stephen Ratterman for indoor dancing only. I love Robert Land shoes so much I just purchased a side lacing and I also wear his shoes for modern dress and have received tons of compliments and where did you get those shoes they are great.
