This weekend, with the trusty van not completely shaken out from Banks Grand Retreat, I went to Columbia South Carolina as a part of the Palmetto Living History Association, for a small private viewing of some of the McRae Papers.
Lest we think these are all military documents and invoices, that is not the case--I was drawn immediately to a letter dated in the spring of 65. Because of the way the letters are currently protected, I could not see the reverse of the letter, or discern the name of the writer. I trust he was a good friend of McRae's.
In it, he describes the abdomidable conditions in Richmond, and his own helplessness in aiding his wife and child stranded there. The writer informs McRae that he has drawn a 'sight draft' on McRae's name for sufficient funds to get the family out of Richmond, and transported to, of all places, Washington, and settled there.
Essentially, he has written a hot check for a substantial sum, with the notice that his friend McRae's will cover it, and now informs McRae of that fact.
I look forward to the full acquistion of these letters and their subsequent publication. We civilians shall learn a lot as well.
