  • Canvas Buckets?

    Evening all,

I was digging through my old cubbie hole which once kept most of my reenacting gear and those lovely "haversack stuffers" of old. Threw a moldy old forage cap out, then came across something I forgot I had purchased, a canvas water bucket.

Now I sort of recall a discussion on these a while back, but after a search, came up with nothing. Either it's due to great crash or just me being mistaken.

Anyone have info on canvas buckets or even where some sutler got the idea to make and/or sell them? I know I know, it could be a completely farbtastic item and I'm fine with that answer. :) Just curious.

    Regards,

    Re: Canvas Buckets?

The Annual Report of the Quartermaster Department by the War Department in 1861 mentioned the following: That canvas basins and canvas buckets be furnished by this department for sale to officers, such articles being considered necessary.

        Matt,

Most of the ones you see in "that other hobby" are of Great War vintage or newer. About 10-12 years ago, a great number of sutlers carried what must have been a forgotten warehouse load of the folding canvas buckets, and many still had wartime markings on them. That would be WW1 markings. I may still have one or more buried in the back room of the bunker.

If memory serves me, you'll find vague descriptions in the usual pre-war travel. sources. The quest is to find surviving CW era relics to see what the real thing is like, and perhaps failing that, some good photographs of them in use in the field.

Of course, from the many threads on this subject, we all know why using such for potable water is not a good idea. That need not be repeated, especially for the squeamish.
