She's soo cute! I love the tucks on her bodice and the ruffles on the upper sleeves! Her ringlettes are amazing! I am assuming this is 1850s? judging by the dress. Thank you for sharing!!

I'd put her in the 50s due to the hairstyle, and the sleeves that we don't see much of in the 60s. It's a great sleeve treatment, though, for pre-war things. A long, slim, bias-cut sleeve with two little frills set on the bicep area, using the "flounce on a cord" method to my eye. The dress is a great example of combining pleats and gathering in the same dress.

What is that around her neck? Is that a collar of the dress itself or is it an add on?

          Mark Jaeger:
What is with the little girls in red dresses? When are you going to get back to work on publishing Osterrichische Infanterie - Feurgewehr, Wien, 1857 that you translated from German into English?

Luke, that's a decorative ribbon or embroidered "collar" piece worn around the neck and held in place with a brooch; you'll see it most often on pictures of women, but occasionally on children. Another common style of "collar" for children is the "tucker"--a narrow frill of lace or whitework set onto a narrow bias band, and basted inside the neckline of a dress.

The collar is beautiful but it almost looks as if it is choking her. Regardless, it is a wonderful picture. Thanks for sharing.
