If you're looking for an alternative to soccer camp this summer, please consider this program. When I worked at Old Bethpage in the 1980s and early 1990s I helped with this program and it's really a great way for kids to get outside during the summer and learn some history.
Old Bethpage Offers Youngsters Opportunity to Experience 19th-Century Life
During Week-Long Summer Program
Ever wonder what life was like in a typical Long Island village in the mid-19th century? Children ages nine through 12 can make that voyage of discovery in a unique summer program being offered this summer at Old Bethpage Village.
OBVR’s Junior Apprentice Education Program will be offered in six one-week sessions beginning June 25, with each session limited to 18 children. The program week features hands-on experiences of 19th century life including historic crafts, farm chores, school time in a one-room schoolhouse using slate boards, household activities such as churning butter and operating a loom, making a scarecrow, gathering eggs and more. Nineteenth century children’s games will also be featured, such as rolling hoops and shooting marbles. The fee for each session is $210 per child.
“Life without today’s conveniences might at first seem a challenge, but the experience will prove enriching and will certainly build an appreciation among children for the lifestyles and hardships of their ancestors,” says OBVR Site Director and Curator Jim McKenna.
