  • Indiana Legion

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. I stuck it here because the subject is more civilian militia. If it needs to be moved, by all means, move it. Anyways...

I've been interested in the Indiana Legion for some time now. I saw Mark Mason's post on the "homespun" thread, and began to wonder if there was anyone out there doing serious research on the subject and/or making a serious effort to recreate the Legion on the feild? If so, I'd love to get in touch.

Once again, sorry if this is in the wrong place.

    Re: Indiana Legion

    Hi Adam,

If you're interested in the Indiana Legion (state militia), contact me privately and we'll discuss it further. The short answer to your probable question is that, by law, Indiana Legion companies were authorized to adopt any suitable uniform for their use. Most apparently did adopt uniforms identical, or similar, to those described in the Army Regulations and Indianapolis papers, for example, carry ads from merchant tailors catering to this trade. Indianapolis firms even offered ready-to-wear uniforms. Articles of organization for some Indiana Legion companies still survive in the Indiana State Archives and the uniforms reportedly adopted ranged from the practical to rather fancy.
