  • The infamous Western Museum of Cincinnati

Any suggestions where to find a good description of the Western Museum of Cincinnati in the 1860s? Pretty cool place, basically a forerunner of P.T. Barnum's museum in New York.

There are lots of eye-witness descriptions of the Western Museum in its heyday in the 1820s-1840s, but I'm looking for something in the 1860-1867 era, just before it closed.

Found a JSTOR article at http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=000...3E2.0.CO%3B2-Q . The first page has a good description of the museum in the late 1830s (though I'm guessing it's partially from the 1840s, unless the museum really did have a Feejee Mermaid before Feejee Mermaids became cool in 1842). The closest computer with full JSTOR access is almost an hour away, so it's not worth it, unless there's an equally good description later on of the museum in the 1860s.

Any suggestions where to look? Can anyone with JSTOR tell me how much about the 1860s is in the article?

    [HOUSTON] TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, October 28, 1863,

    Wanted.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.
