        Annette -

These mid-winter Balls are great. We sponsor one each year. We also have the same problem in that the band we hire, though wonderful, does not in detail represent a period band, mostly because of their modern instruments - like your fine band pictured here with non-period mandolin-banjo and dreadnaught guitar.

What they will do for us though is a song or two using only the period repro instruments they do happen to have (fiddle and fretless banjo) explaining it as such.

Play on, wish I was in the area for your Ball...

Yes, period bands can be a challenge. Unfortunately, I could not keep the ball tickets at a reasonable price and still pay the cost of a period band, their accommodations and travel.

However, this band is a highly respected contra band within a short drive of the event site. They are working with me on period music, dances and clothing as is the dance mistress. I'm very confident they will fit the bill well and really add to the event.

Just an FYI. I have updated the ball page on my website with some additional links to dancing information (some great videos) and the expected program.
