  • immense French decorative arts data base

Be careful accessing this database, especially if you have stacks of papers and exams to grade! This image collection comprises thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of illustrations, engravings, etc., all beautifully digitized in large format. There are even men's tailors' manuals, patterns, needlework, pretty much anything you might want to study in 18th and 19th century European decorative arts.

In order to search the fashion plate collection, click on "recherche simple" and type in a date (e.g., 1860) and/or the word "mode" in the Termes de Recherche space. Then click on the button Collection Macinet. Once you've accessed the collection, you will have to choose one of the books & click on 'voir les notices.' You'll be able to download any of these images. Offhand I don't know what the copyright issues are; I looked through the whole site but couldn't find anything on that subject. I believe you have to pay to publish the sources in print, but I saw nothing to indicate that there was any problem about posting the images online.

I think if you want to do a more complex search, you'll have to ask for help from a French-speaking friend or perhaps try Babblefish from Alta Vista to translate search terms. I tried some basic searches just using a date and searching the entire collection, and got far too many hits.

This is a terrible time-sink, so I apologize in advance to those of you with deadlines!
