    Mark your calendars! The Society for Women and the Civil War presents Women at Gettysburg: The 10th Conference on Women and the Civil War on July 25-27, 2008 at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

    (NOTE: The conference is open to the public for a nominal fee. The “early bird” deadline is May 1; both SWCW members and non-members are entitled to discounts if they register by that date. In celebration of the SWCW’s 10th conference, members who register by May 1 will be doing so at the same rate as for the 1997 conference.)

    'Women and the Civil War' Conference Student Scholarships

    CALL FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ENTRIES - 2008

    The Society for Women and the Civil War invites students to enter the first annual scholarship competition for its 10th Conference on Women and the Civil War! The conference will be held in the greater Gettysburg, PA area on the 25, 26 and 27th of July 2008. The scholarship includes two nights accommodations, full conference registration, field trip and meals, a total value of approximately $500. Transportation to and from the conference is not included.

    The Society for Women and the Civil War is dedicated to recognizing the lives and efforts of women from 1861-1865, both Union and Confederate, showcasing original and innovative research in its conferences. The 2008 Conference on Women and the Civil War is being held three weeks after the 145th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. We will highlight the women’s roles in the battle and women’s lives in the Gettysburg area in our conference field trips and in some (but certainly not all) of the presentations.

    HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP:

    Scholarship winners will be selected on the basis of a presentation, based on original research, on the lives and efforts of woman in the Civil War era. The subjects may be examined from a microhistory perspective. The submissions will be judged based on the quality of the research based principally upon use of primary sources. The winners will present their research during a Tabletop/Posterboard session at the Conference.

    Applicants must submit:

    1. A synopsis of the presentation, not more than 3 pages. The synopsis must include a description of visual aids that will be used to illustrate and highlight the presentation.
    2. A bibliography of the primary and secondary sources used. Our operational definitions are appended.
    3. A personal vitae or biography, not more than 1 page, including contact information.
