    Re: Sparks of Seccession - Westville 1861 / Oct 17-19, 2008

There are some unique aspects planned for the Sparks of Secession - Westville 1861 event in October:

Economy: Reenactors will have part of their registration returned to them in the form of repro, "Notes". Additional notes can also be purchased thru registration or at time of sign-in. Of the proceeds, $1 for every $10 will go to Historic Westville (also $5 of each registration will be donated to Historic Westville). These "Notes" are used to feed the economy and livelihood of Westville, GA. You will need these "Notes" to buy your basic neccesities (food, meat, supplies) as well as luxury goods (sutler items, clothes, show tickets, herbs/spices, stationary, tavern, pre-cooked foods, leathergoods) and services (cooking, Domestic, laundry, livery, tailor, ambrotypist, etc). There are no free rides so everyone must cook and prepare their own food. We will have several cookfires going throughout the town to cook your food. There is one working cooking hearth and we will have full-time cook preparing meals for those interested. You have to pay "Notes" for her services. Our hope is that by having some type of "working" currency that it will not only add life to the town but also increase the quality of our first person.

Sleeping/Camping Arrangements: Unfortunately, we can not promise a house for each person. Sleeping/ Camping arrangements are improvised for this event. Recruits will camp in the 21st GA encampment on the Courthouse lawn. Civilians will camp either communally in the available buildings, shelters, porches or in a seperate tent city. This tent city if off limits to the public and not part of the scenario (however you are to still try to remain in first person and keep modern talk in low tones in this area). It is, however, a place for you to sleep, change, cook, etc.). Both areas will have cook fires for cooking. We are only able to use about 1/2 of the buildings as some are off-limits and are furnished with antiques. Buildings will be assigned to reenactors depending on their roles and availability. You can bring a bed and personal items, and tools for your role, but do not bring additional furniture.

First Person: The event goes LIVE at Friday 5 pm. It is first person from then until Sunday at 2 pm. PLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE BEFORE FRIDAY AT 5 PM! Take a vacation day and you can also see the Columbus Naval Museum, Fort Benning Infantry Museum or Andersonville/POW Museum. We will have interpretors/docents leading groups throughout the event. Everyone else is to remain in first person and leave the interpretation and modern conversations with the public to the Interpretors/Docents. Each reenactor is asked to research their role and be able to recreate the role, craft, duty, etc. Reenactors shoudl also bring any appropriate supplies, tools, etc to conduct their role. If you need a role assigned, we can provide you one. We also will start with two full-time Recuits who will be in the Military camp all weekend.

Vignettes: Each reenactor and their role is essentially its own vignette. As reeanctors do business throughout the town and interact with eacg other it will bring the town to life. We will have some scheduled large vignettes that include the whole town. ALL reenactors MUST take part in these scheduled vignettes. These will include BBQ and Fire Eater Rally (Fri evening), Mustering of the troops (Sat. Afternoon), Flag Presentation and Departure Parade (Sun 2 pm). At night the site is closed to the public, but we will remain in first person. Friday evening is the Rally and Saturday evening is Entertainment and Tavern is open.

Military: As men are recruited into the 21st GA, they will close shop on their civilian business and check in to the military camp on the Courthouse lawn and will now be military recruits. They should now follow their ordered military schedule. Women will thus either take over the males civilian business or close the business. Throughout Saturday all recruits will be in the Military camp.

The website summarizes these at: www.geocities.com/scar_civilwar/WestvilleIndex

Early Registration cut off Aug 30th

Early registration for Sparks of Secession - Westville, GA 1861 ends August 30th. All early registrations must be postmarked by August 30th and then the fee goes up.
The website for info and Registration form is at:

Remember that your registration includes FIVE period meals throughout the weekend (meal tickets will be issued). One of the meals is a PERIOD pit BBQ served at our Saturday night Recruitment Rally. Your registration money also covers $12 that will be issued back to you in the form of "Notes" that can be spent at the event. Ezra Barnhouse Goods will run the General Store and be fully stocked and ready top accomodate your needs. Todd Harrington will be there striking images as an Ambrotypist. There will also be other goods and services available throughout the village. Thus, we have a working economy at the event. More "Notes" can be purchased at the event as well.
A donation will also be made to the site as well.

We also have a Reenactor Refuge area for people to set up their tents (A frames, wall tents, dogs, shebangs flies are all acceptable). You may keep any creature comforts you wish in your tent as long as they stay there. This area is off limits to the spectators and this area gives you chance to rest, sleep, eat or chat out of first person. A limited amount of straw will also be provided. Fire wood is limited but also available (all meals are provided so cooking is an option but not needed). We ask that all reenactor bring a period cup, plate and utensils for meals.

Please do not miss out on this unique event sponsered by SCAR (SE Coalition of Authentic Reenactors) that allows us to play in a fully functional 1850s town with original structures. This events mission is to give the feel of being part of a rural, 1861, GA town during the exciting time of Secession and the call to arms. The military impression is the 21st GA, Co. I, "Stewart Infantry" and we will have a military encampment all weekend and civilians can convert to military over the course of the weekend as they are recruited, mustered in and report for duty in camp (uniforms are primarily civilian/militia...see Men's Dress Guidelines on webpage). You can also opt to be full-time military all weekend as well. We will also have fife and drummers as well.

Exciting scenarios include a period BBQ and Recruitment Rally, an important trial at the courthouse, infantry drills, working tavern, Ladies Aid Society, and countless working roles including textile production, dying, spinning, woodworking, blacksmithing, cotton ginning, quilting, hearth cooking, etc, etc. Many people are coming with unique and well researched roles.
If you feel you don't have skill or role, we will will find you one that is satisfactory. The town does need many people portraying farmers travelling to town to do business. So, we encourage you to attend and be part of this unique opportunity!

Below is a list of those registered thus far and their roles. Some important roles we still need filled are: Defense Attorney, Law clerk, Accused, Laborers/Teamsters, travelling farmers. We also need a handful of people who would like to take a couple of hours on Saturday to act as docents leading tours. If you have any questions contact me at unionguy1@comcast.net

Although Westville is in rural Lumpkin, GA. If you plan your trip right there are many great historic tourist sites within 40 miles (Andersonville, Columbus CW Naval Museum, Fort Benning Infantry Museum, Providence Park...links are on the webopage). I look forward to seeing you there!

So who's the real John Garland? :) Yes, John Garland actually does show up twice in the 1860 census of Lumpkin, but since he has the same age and family both times, I think it's more a case of two census takers rather than two John Garlands. :)

I caught that as well, but I also agree it was the sma eperson. Thus, I am likely going to reassign a different name to one of you. I still have some census work and rework to do still.

Jim and all those traveling for the event,

I just spoke with a friend at Ft. Benning and currently the Infantry Museum is closed for relocation. I just wanted to pass that along so people didn't make plans to visit and be disappointed to find it closed. I'm unsure of when they plan to reopen but it may not be until early next year. The other museums in and around Columbus are still worth your time if you plan to visit them though!

                Cheers,
                Cheers,

If you're coming down through Atlanta, stop at the Atlanta History Center, take a look around. they have a few items from the Wray collection on display in the front hall- including the much discussed ticking frock. Donate some money for the Wray collection while you're there- no matter how large or small, every penny counts!:D

Sparks of Secession is coming fast and early registration is now closed. We will announce early reg. door prize winners soon (must be present to collect). Late Registration closes on October 7th and there are NO walk-ons. So, do not delay. Roles available are already limited. We have put many hours of research, labor and love into this event so far. NOTE, your registration fee covers, five meals (two breakfast, two lunch, one dinner-period BBQ) and $12 in "Notes" issued back to you to spend in the Village. We also will make a $5 per registration donation to the Wetsville Historic Site. So, have fun and help support the site!

Event info and registration is at:

New things added to the site:
                    -Updated Vendor Page
                    -Registration List/Roles is updated weekly.
                    - 'Notes on Cotton' page (see 'Secession and Stewart Cty.')
                    -Event Guidelines updated.

This is a VERY UNIQUE event on one of the best historic villages in the U.S. Be part of and witness farmers selling cotton to brokers, period pit BBQ and rally, court preceedings in the courthouse, recruting station, tavern, ambrotypyst, textile makers, Blacksmith shop, Wood workers shop, period church service on Sun., Ladies Aid Society, Military drills and encampment (21st GA, Co. I), Stocked General Store, post office, Flag Presentation ceremony, etc, etc. Don't be surprised if you receive a tax notice, subpeona, Jury Duty summons, fines for violations, rewards for fullfilling "goals",etc, etc. Being able to enlist and shift from civilian to military is also a unique aspect of this event. You can see the AC discussion for further info on the events unique aspects.
This event is not about "Us vs Them". We have made camping arrangements for those wanting to use tents and creature comforts in a Reenactor Refuge area. In the village we maintain our event minimum standards and first person. This is an event for women and gentlemen, young and old, mainstream and c/p/h, but not farb. This is a nice balance that accomodates a wide range of reenactors. If you want to bring a period town to life and can meet a basic, minimum, posted standard then this event is for you! We encourage people with children to register. We will extend the early childrens registration fee of $20 to all children who register with an adult.

ALSO, we NEED just 4-6 more guys to sign-up for Westville and attend as full-time military. If they sign up, I will allow them the lower $35 early, registration fee. Please tell people that they are issued passes throughout the weekend. They can bring their A-frame, wall or Sibley tent, shebangs for the Military camp( no dog tents). Passes will be issued to shop and visit in town, Rally, meals, etc. But, there must be military demos throughout Saturday 10 am-5 pm for the public.
Dress for this military role is mostly civilian, some militia and commutation gear. Weapons are optional. If you don't have a pre-61 weapon, it is okay as many of these men did not have weapons or issued gear till they reached VA. We will also have some loaner pre-61 weapons. Robby Mitchell is the 1st Sgt and Drill Sgt for the event. We will be using Gilham's per Robby Mitchell.

The primary men's roles that are left are:
                    - Full-time military.
                    - Farmer in town on business.
                    - Clerk for brokerage or law office.
                    - Overseer in town for business.

Tours of spectators will be led by 3rd person docents throughout Saturday 10 am-5 pm. The rest of the time we have the village to ourselves, but we will maintain first person in the village the entire weekend. The Reenactor Refuge (off limits to spectators) is a place to rest, sleep, break first person, for anyone to utilize.

If you would like to be a Tour Guide/Docent (on Saturday for 2-4 hours) or Volunter at set-up (2-4 hours) on friday please contact me at unionguy1@comcast.net

                      Kirby Smith, et al:

The National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning is closed at this time and will reopen on 20 March 2008. However, the Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum (formerly the Confederate Naval Museum) has a fantastic collection and presentation. I heartily recommend visiting this state-of-the-art facility.

Also, the Andersonville prison camp and National POW Museum are also close by. Did I mention that the site of the Columbus Depot is also nearby, as well as the Columbus Iron Works where the CS Ordnance Works and CS Naval Ordnance works operated is now the Convention Center with exhibits showing the history of the works since 1852.

If you are planning to attend Sparks of Secession and would like to know more about the historic sites in the area, feel free to contact me off-line.

Sparks of Secession is closing in and if you have not submitted registration it is time to take action. Late All registrations must be postmarked before Oct 7th. There will be NO walk-ons! Look at the registration list below...It looks like a whose who of quality living historians. I also consider this a "compromise" event for mainstream and c/p/h reenactors, but NOT farbs. Congratulations to Billy Birney who won the ambrotype and sitting with Todd Harrington. So, do not delay. Roles available are already limited. We have put many hours of research, labor, blood and love into this event so far. NOTE, your registration fee covers, five meals (two breakfast, two lunch, one dinner-period BBQ) and $12 in "Notes" issued back to you to spend in the Village. We also will make a $5 per registration donation to the Westville Historic Site. So, have fun and help support the site!

Event info and registration is at:

New things added to the site:
                        -Updated Vendor Page
                        -Registration List/Roles is updated weekly.
                        - 'Notes on Cotton' page (see 'Secession and Stewart Cty.')

This is a VERY UNIQUE event on one of the best historic villages in the U.S. Be part of and witness farmers selling cotton to brokers, period pit BBQ and rally, court preceedings in the courthouse, recruting station, tavern, ambrotypyst, textile makers, Blacksmith shop, Wood workers shop, basket weavers, fishmongers, vegetable farmers, Textile makers, Spicer, doctor, livery workers, Seamstress, Teamsters, leather workers, boot makers, quilters, travellers, period church service on Sun., Ladies Aid Society, Military drills and encampment (21st GA, Co. I), Stocked General Store, post office, Tavern, working cotton gin, Cooks at a period hearth, Flag Presentation ceremony, etc, etc.
This is a nice "compromise" that accomodates a wide range of reenactors. If you want to bring a period town to life and can meet a basic, minimum, posted standard then this event is for you! We encourage people with children to register. We will extend the early childrens registration fee of $20 to all children who register with an adult.

ALSO, we NEED just 3-5 more guys to sign-up for Westville and attend as full-time military.

                        - Cotton Ginner.
                        - Clerk for brokerage or law office.
                        - Overseer in town for business.
Women and Children roles are still open (contact us with your role idea as many are filled).
