  • Bonnet alternatives??

I know a woman who cannot wear bonnets because the string/ribbon that ties around the neck bothers a neck injury that she has. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative headwear for a middle aged woman?

      Mr. Carroll,

Since no one has chimed in I will take a stab at it though there are others infinitely more qualified than I. You mention she is middle aged, but what economic level? An urban, very well to do lady could wear a stylish hat under certain circumstances.

Something to consider...if the bonnet fits well the ribbons can be tied very loosely and should not be an irritant. Bonnet pins were also available (Mrs. Christen's Miscellanea carries a nice reproduction set and orginals may be seen at either the Arabia or Bertrand museums, sorry but I can't remember which just now). On occasion (e.g. very windy days) I use a rather short hat pin which might suffice.

      Good luck!

Another option would be something along the lines of a slat bonnet. So long as the day is not terribly windy, my slat will stay in place without tying the strings at all, due to the depth of the bonnet itself. Sunbonnets can be made to be utilitarian, or made in delicate fabrics for a very confectionary "fashionable sunbonnet" style.

When pinned on with a bonnet/hat pin, my bonnet stays on without tying the ribbon or with the ribbon so loosely tied, the tie is below the base of my neck. Perhaps that would be an option?
