  • Identifying a carpet maker

Over the past five years I have been doing research into period carpet bags and pre-war tapestry bags. I have examined at least a couple dozen carpet bags but need help with the following:

I have examined three carpet bags in private hands, seen one for sale at auction (pictured in attachment), and one for sale at the Horse Soldier in Gettysburg which all have the same carpet pattern and colors.

Does anyone know the maker of the particular carpet used to make these original carpet bags? (Please see picture for detail.)

Any help will be much appreciated.

      Matthew,

One guy I know here in GA, Mark Thoman, may be able to help. He's currently the corporate historian for Mohawk (carpet) Industries and has done some considerable research concerning 19th c. carpets. If he doesn't know I am sure he can put you onto the right track. Email me for his contact info. Thanks, Garrett
