The houses at Athens are now fully booked. Any other civilians interested in participating in this event should plan on staying in the camp of convenience, which will be located very close to the village. The camp of convenience won't be open to visitors or spectators. If you're planning to camp there, you'll want to keep your tents closed during the day. There is still room for more men and women who are interested in portraying Athens civilians. Although you'll be staying in the camp of convenience, you'll be fully integrated into all the goings-on.
Civilian activities include everyday chores, such as laundry, cooking, and gardening. If you followed some of the posts under the military threads, you know that the citizens of Athens (who were mostly pro-southern) prepared a banquet for the Missouri State Guard. After the MSG were defeated at the battle of Athens, the banquet was eaten by the members of the Missouri Home Guard instead.
The village and surroundings are very pretty and worth seeing. This is a wonderful event for civilians because there's a great deal for us to do in the town (i.e., we actually have a legitimate reason for being there.) The battle is reenacted right on the original soil & in fact takes place in & around town. The park rangers are interested in having a lively, active, authentic civilian presence this year and want us to recreate some of the events that took place during and after the battle. Those will include not only the banquet I mentioned earlier, but also some exciting incidents that took place inside or near the houses. The rangers are placing a lot of stress on authenticity this year & are doing a great deal of work on the village in preparation for this event.
There is no event fee, but you may be asked to pay a $10 fee to cover insurance unless you are already a member of the MCWRA. Firewood, fresh water and sanitation will be provided by the Park Rangers.
If you're interested in participating as a civilian, please get in touch with me, either via pm or through the Star of the West at starofthewest@gmail.com.
Vivian Murphy is the contact for sutlers. Anyone interested in setting up shop at the event should send her a message.
