    Jon,
    This would be a great idea for interepretive purposes. I infer from what I've read about rawhide shoes being worn by soldiers, is that the fellows were taking chunks of untanned raw skin with the hair still on it from the area where stock were being butchered for the Army and wrapping it around the feet...which I perceive to probably be with the hair on the inside due the nasty "stuff" that would have been on the flesh side of the skin. I'm sure the grease and oils from the flesh side of the hide would have attracted dirt, dust, and etc making for filthy footwear.
