  • Video of veteran drummers and fifers

On my new blog where I rant about 1860s fifing and drumming...

Anybody know of an easy way to pull and freeze the individual frames from a video? This is a short clip, but other parts of this movie have video but no audio and I'm hoping to figure out some of the drum parts.

Nice blog, Will. Idle thought: I wonder if it might be possible for someone experienced in lip reading to possibly help you with the videos. A while back, I watched a fascinating program discussing silent home movie footage of Adolf Hitler and his cronies speaking to each other. Using software originally developed for the deaf, researchers were able to determine what was being said in the Hitler films and add audio soundtracks to them. Very cool stuff.

You can see the entire program below link. This technology raises all kinds of interesting possibilities especially when dealing with pre-1930's silent footage of Civil War veterans.

Man, this is great stuff. Please share all you got.

PS I used to get lectured by Paul C. for linking videos instead of imbedding. Not sure what the diff is, but the imbed does look cooler. Just passing that on...

PPS Wait, you didn't link the vid, just the blog, never mind...

Great stuff! I hope I have that much git-up-n-go when I'm that age!

Just FYI, the Detroit News has a still photo of the musicians from the first photo with their identities. I just happened to stumble across them this evening and was surprised to learn that four of them were from Michigan.

By the way, where is that video originally from? I would love to be able to see a full version of it.
