National Civil War Field Music School

    Hello all,

I am sending this email out to announce a new and exciting Field Music School I’m involved with.

The National Civil War Field Music School is being held June 13-15, 2008 at Pamplin Historical Park http://www.pamplinpark.org/, which is located on original battlefield ground near Petersburg,VA. Students will be housed in reproduction Civil War winter huts and will receive musical and military training from first-rate instructors.

The school is being run by the National Association for Civil War Brass Music, Inc. (NACWBM), a non-profit organization which is also the parent organization of The Federal City Brass Band and the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band.

The President of the NACWBM Board of Directors is Mr. Michael Vice, retired curator at Gettysburg National Military Park, and the Board includes several retired military, respected musicians/scholars, and educators. They are excited about this undertaking, noting it falls under the NACWBM charter to “Educate musicians seeking to re-create the roles of bandsmen and field musicians of the Civil War era in the arena of living history.”

The Music Faculty for the school will include:
    • Jari Villanueva, Bugle, USAF Band Drum Major, Principal Musician Federal City Brass Band, Director of Bands UMBC, Bugler in “Gods and Generals”
    • George Rabbai, Bugle, bugler extraordinaire of the Mifflin Guard, music faculty Rowan University, music heard in Ken Burns’ “Baseball”
    • Chuck Woodhead, Bugle, Chief Bugler, 1st Division ANV
    • Doug Hedwig, Bugle, 27 years Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Trumpet Professor at Brooklyn College, member Federal City Brass Band
    • Tim Ertel, Fife, Principal Musician The Fort McHenry Guard
    • Joe Korber, Fife, Principal Musician The National Regiment
    • Jeb Hague, Fife, Drum, The Old Guard
    • David Loyal, Drum, The Old Guard
    • Jason Maines, Drum, Principal Drummer The National Regiment
    • Stephan Southard, Drum, Co D 3rd US
    • Bill Bynum, Fife, Principal Musician The Carolina Legion Fife and Drums

The Military Staff for the school includes:
    • Bill Watson, Military Commander
    • Chris Anders
    • Scot Buffington
    • Andrew Dangel
    • Joel Hummel
    • Michael Schaffner
    • Jim Tate
    • Michael Vice

(most folks here know the credentials of the Military staff, but their bios are on the website-I'm honored to have them associated with the school)

The 26th NC Regimental Band will also attend to support this school!

I personally am thrilled to have such wonderful musicians and military step up to teach our young musicians.

Our website is going live today at www.nationalcivilwarfieldmusicschool.com Look for ads too, starting in November, and please help us spread the word by telling others!

Meanwhile if you are interested, please mark the date. You can reserve a spot today by e-mailing fieldmusicschool@nationalcivilwarbrassmusic.org or contact me personally at jvmusic@erols.com

You can also help us by spreading the word about the school. A poster is available on the website under Registration and Forms.

    Thanks

Is this the same organization that produces the Don Hubbard Field Music School at Fort Delaware? Upon visiting your site, I see a page referencing the legacy of Don Hubbard. Has the Don Hubbard program relocated?

If this is not the same program and a new initiative, how is it different / better than the the Field Music School offered at Fort Delaware earlier in June? Thanks very much.

      Thanks for the posting.

This is not an extension of the Don Hubbard Field Music School. The school is being run by the National Association for Civil War Brass Music, Inc. (NACWBM), a non-profit organization which is also the parent organization of The Federal City Brass Band and the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band.

As I posted elsewhere, I have resigned from that organization effective June 3, 2007.
The opportunity for the National Civil War Field Music School came up and I was happy to seize the opportunity to work with field music students. As you can read from the website, the idea for a field music school was originally envisioned by Don and myself just after Gods and Generals. Don was a good friend and I can't see not trying to follow his dreams. What we bring to the National Civil War Field Music School is Don’s vision and spirit if not his name.

As to it being different/better, I invite you to check out who is involved with the school, what is being offered, location etc etc and draw your own conclusion. There is certainly room for more than one field music school on the east coast and I invite everyone to choose a school that meets their needs and desires. I bring my expertise as a field musician, bandsman, principal musician and organizer and, above all, my desire to surround myself with the best people in the Civil War hobby today. We have a good nonprofit organization (with some really fine people on the board) that is sponsoring the school and a really good place at Pamplin Historical Park who is hosting the weekend plus a first rate staff.

Our website will be updated frequently and emailed questions will receive a prompt reply. Please keep checking back. Better yet, register today! :)

      Best Regards

        Jari,

Thank you for the quick reply. Yes, I know some of your Staff personally and others by reputation. Sounds like a quality esperience. I've got a standing prior commitment that Saturday that prevents me from joining you. Wish I could be there. Best wishes for success with this endeavor.

This sounds like a great weekend. I'm definitely going to try and make it if at all possible....

The location is ideal...it has the potential to draw folks from all along the East coast...North and South.

              Hello,
Have I misunderstood the registration requirements, or is registration limted to musicians who have advanced beyond the beginner level?

              Thank you

"Beginner" is one of the levels one can indicate when registering. See page 2 of reg package for musicians

I saw that as well, but the press release dated October 17, 2007 states that "Registration is open to novice, intermediate, and advanced Field Musicians, ages 11 through adult...." Maybe the press release is incorrect.

                  Thanks

I was also looking at the flyer and noticed that the beginner, intermediate, and advanced students were broken up according to the amount of the camp duty they can play. Since Hart, Howe, and B&E are listed as choices, I am curious about what version will actually be taught since you obviously can't use multiple versions simultaneously.

                          Will
                          I sent you a PM.

This is an question that has plauged us. What to use. B&E is too hard for novice. Joe Whitney calls it "a form of child abuse" and he is right. I would think we would use the Howe for the novice-intermediate and B&E for aadvanced but also concentrate on basic rudiments too.

The Instructors will be working on a curiculum and syllabus which we will post. I am also looking to have fife and drum duty calls recorded after the holidays so we can post them (along with bugle calls) on the website. I can get use the recording facilities at my school (which is near BWI airport) during January. We are going to run the school by calls. No watches allowed:)

Sorry about the misinformation on the initial flyer. Beginners are indeed welcome!!

                          Best Regards

                              Jeff,

I know Jari and George Rabbai personally and they are two of the finest "professional" musicians you will find anywhere. If you need to select one of the events all you really need to do is look at the credentials of the musicians that Jari has assembled and I think the choice is really very clear. If you are looking improve as a musician and also have a great experience you cannot do any better then Jari's program.
