    Paul McKee wrote a very good article on the correct method of sewing 19th century patches, possibly in the Company Wag, many years ago. This image really shows what a well sewn patch should look.

      Without digitally enhancing the photo, the outside edge of the right knee patch appears to be below the surface of the trouser leg. If this is the case the the patch is not applied to the outside of the garment but rather from the inside as recommended in several period sewing manuals.
