A friend just sent this to me. An image on eBay of a pair of South Carolina shoes (Brogans). Note the craftsmanship (?) of these:

Re: South Carolina Shoes
The photographer's mark is from Massachusetts, a center of shoemaking in the north. Was he pointing out the lack of southern shoemaking skill, perhaps?

Re: South Carolina Shoes
That was my read on the matter Hank---
And my real first thought was that someone with a particular interest in this sort of manufacturing brought them back as a souvenier from a trip, and had a picture made of them. I've been hauling around a chinese washbasin and a length of indigo blockprint for about 30 years now on the same principle.Terre Hood Biederman

Re: South Carolina Shoes
As in brought-back souvenirs from the battlefield (ie , canteens and flags (of course) being a big one) I have the feeling this picture is documentation of the lurid fascination by Northerners of what Southerners were doing in order to prosecute the war effort from their angle.
Thanks for sharing.
Can't wait to see these in repro... ;)Johnny Lloyd

Re: South Carolina Shoes
I tried my hand at making a pair of shoes back in the spring. I have to say mine fare a tad (just a tad) bit nicer.
Interesting to see. I would like to see these in reproduction also. The looks one would get lumbering down the company street.....................Scott House
