Federal canteen strap

I have a New York contractor ,smoothside canteen with a linen strap from a authentic vendor but one thing worries me ,should the strap be made from cotton drill (pressed & sewn).The smoothsides in EOG seem to have cotton drill straps .Can anyone enlighten me.
