Re: Ordnance Returns of the 4th Georgia Cavalry

Another nice one, Will!! The felt pads are interesting. Could very well be British imports as to my knowledge this item was not made by the Confedeacy and at this time in the war the pre war civilian appropriations were long since gone. Felt was made from pressed wool. Not a typical American military item in the period but more common in England. In fact, numnahs were made from felt and perhaps that is exactly what these are.

My biggest question is how much and/or which items were Confederate manufacture and how much of it was CS arsenal refurbished Federal equipage? During the Atlanta campaign alot of the cavalry units were equipped with items being issued from the stores at Atlanta and shipped from the other nearby arsenals including Macon, Augusta and even Columbus. This is really great stuff!!

Re: Ordnance Returns of the 4th Georgia Cavalry

Here's an interesting one, why do they list 103 saddles on the July 12th report; yet they specify on the July 20th report 100 cavalry saddles? Could it be that the saddles issued on the 12th were civilian saddles, or am I just reading too much into this?

And they issued 260 muskets with bayonets to a cavalry unit.

I noticed that Navy pistols and cartridges seem to outnumber the Army pistols and cartridges in this and the other records we've seen lately.

Re: Ordnance Returns of the 4th Georgia Cavalry

This is the sort of infomation that is VITAL to the proper understanding of what actually went on in a particular regiment vs. the average, or even vs. our expectations.

Thanks to Andy German and John Tobey I have had the good fortune to see the returns on a variety of Federal units and it will amaze you how spotty equipment issues were, and how non-uniform even Federals were in their armaments. Frankly speaking, it is this sort of information, and detail that has long been really lacking in cavalry research as opposed to our pards in the infantry. Good stuff!

As for the saddles vs. cavalry saddles, I would tend to think that they are the same thing, just listed differently. You see it in Federal returns where an item is counted one way the first time, differently the 2nd count, and back to the original count on the third return. Clearly the items were there, they were just counted or described differently.

              Take care,

Note how they are still getting "Saber Belts", which means they are still carrying at least some sabers. Also note the lack of bayonet scabbards.....
